The idea of a united “Turkic world” put forward by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan does not pose a threat to Russia. This was stated by the official representative of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.
“Indeed, there is a commonality in the Turkic world – cultural, historical. And the countries of Central Asia, even our republics of the Russian Federation, our Tatars, Bashkirs, yes, they have a common history with the Turks. This is a linguistic history, cultural, common traditions. So there is nothing wrong with that, “Peskov told RTI when asked whether the idea of creating a” neo-Ottoman empire “, a” Turkic world “from Istanbul to Yakutia, threatens Russia’s security.
However, a Kremlin spokesman said that “of course there are nationalist forces in Turkey who want to transform this cultural unity into something more.” “But, thank God, there are not so many of these nationalists, they do not constitute the majority, although they continue to insist on their idea of creating a“ Great Turan ”. They do not say “Ottoman Empire”, they say “Great Turan”, – said Peskov.
At the same time, Peskov noted that nationalists are everywhere, as a rule, they are in the political arena of every state.
“Of course, they are usually held back by the current authorities. And here it is President Erdogan – he has very warm, one might even say, friendly relations with President Putin, which, despite the existence of disagreements, allow them to come together in the most acute moments and solve the most difficult problems, ”Peskov said.
He added that “this has happened more than once, this also applied to Syria, this also applied to the tragic moments of the recent past of bilateral relations.” “But we still managed to reach a peaceful, constructive settlement, and de facto, despite certain contradictions, Turkey is our neighbor, a very important neighbor. Turkey is our partner in very important projects in trade and economic cooperation, investment cooperation, and Turkey is our counterpart in many regional conflicts in the process of resolving them, ”Peskov said.
