“What is happening lately with local self-government bodies is full of deep dangers for the basis of democracy, the right to vote,” Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan wrote on his Facebook page.
According to him, very dangerous interventions are taking place against the local government officials elected by the primary vote of the citizens of Armenia through political and law enforcement processes, in connection with which the public is either not given proper explanations or no explanations are given at all.
“Everything is mainly hidden either in ‘political processes’,” or under the guise of “criminal proceedings”, setting dangerous precedents.
I remind everyone that the right to vote in local self-government elections is guaranteed by Article 48 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and Armenia’s international obligations.
“Suffrage is the foundation of democracy,” he wrote.
