In October-November 2021, a survey was conducted in Yerevan: who is Armenia’s best ally – comparing the nature of attitudes towards Russia and France. The respondents were asked directly whether they consider Russia / France a friendly, unfriendly or neutral country for Armenia. 35% of respondents consider Russia a friendly country, and 43% – France. On the other hand, 17% of respondents consider Russia to be an unfriendly country, and 2% – France.
Samvel Manukyan, candidate of sociological sciences, member of the Eurasian expert club, stated this during the seventh annual meeting of the Eurasian expert club, the conference “Seven years of Armenia’s membership in the EAEU: Eurasian integration yesterday, today, tomorrow”.
When asked what is preferable for Armenia – to develop relations with France or Russia, 30% of respondents answered that it is preferable to develop relations with Russia, and 20% – with France. Almost a third of the respondents – 32% – answered that relations should be developed both with Russia and with France.
To the next question – if Armenia is forced to develop relations either with France or with Russia, what choice should it have, the number of supporters of Russia has almost doubled, 54% of respondents preferred it, and the number of supporters of France increased by 4%, and their the total number reached 23%
Is it possible to compare these data with the data of the question about “which country is the best ally of Armenia, the sociologist does not consider a direct comparison to be correct. “Indirect comparison through relations: in 2019, Russia was considered the best ally in Yerevan by 47%. and France – 12%. The ratio of these indicators in 2019 in Yerevan was 4: 1 in favor of Russia. And the ratio of indicators with which country is it advisable to develop relations when choosing “either – or” – 54%: 23% = 2.3: 1. Thus, after the 44-day war in Yerevan, the position of France in relation to Russia has significantly improved. “
According to the sociologist, the general concept of why Russia is considered a friendly country is a general concept – an interpretation of the Armenian-Russian historical relations. It consists of the following elementary concepts: historically, Russia has always been close to Armenia, in difficult situations Russia has always helped Armenia, in wars only Russia supported Armenia, if not for Russia, Armenia would not exist, Russia protects us from Turkey, Russia protects our borders , Russia is our best ally, Russia is our only choice, Russia is the basis of our industrial development, Russia is our source of income, Armenians have the opportunity to work in Russia, Armenians have the opportunity to develop in Russia, I love Russians (culturally determined emotional attitude).
The private concept is as follows: Russia saved us from a national catastrophe during the 44-day war, Russia stopped the war, Russia sent its troops to our defense, Russia provided tremendous assistance to Karabakh, Russia provided military assistance to Armenia, Russian peacekeepers are in Karabakh today. The sociologist, obviously, believes that the concept is entirely based on historical facts and facts related to the 44-day war.
Why is France considered a friendly country? The general concept is as follows: France is with us at a difficult time, France has provided asylum to Armenians in its country, France has been helping us since 1915, France has recognized the Armenian Genocide, France is the only country that has recognized the Armenian Genocide, France is a friend of Armenia, France treats Armenians well …
The picture of the private concept of the 44-day war is as follows: France helped Armenia with appeals, France tried to help Armenia, France is always ready to help Armenia, France helps in any issue, France was on the side of Armenia during the war. The French President has no anti-Armenian sentiments, there are positive relations between the leaders of our countries, France supported us morally, France supported us diplomatically, France supported us financially, France helped us in the 44-day war.
On the basis of all, the sociologist concludes this. “It is important to note that in the information war in Armenia for the geopolitical orientation of the Armenians, the positions of Russia and the united West are unequal. Russia needs peace in the Transcaucasus for the development of the Eurasian large space. She is forced to maintain a balance between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This constrains Russia’s interpretations, which gives rise to manipulative interpretations of its position and actions, reinforcing anti-Russian sentiments. And the strategy of the united West is to incite conflicts and wars on the periphery of Russia in order to impede the integration of the Eurasian space. And the constraint of the Russian position creates an immense field for propaganda attacks. The fundamental problem that needs to be solved is the lack of capacity of information sources promoting the idea of Eurasian integration. “
