Today journalist Tatul Hakobyan said that in recent days he had received threats of revenge, lynching and even deprivation of life, which is connected with his professional activities. Tatul Hakobyan is on a working trip to the United States these days, and according to the information he has, these threats are coordinated both from Armenia and from certain circles of the Armenian diaspora in America. The journalist notes that the reason for the threats was the thought, expressed in one of his interviews, “Armenia is where the Armenian soldier stands”.
Declaring threats against him, Tatul Hakobyan called on law enforcement agencies, professional and human rights organizations, as well as the US Embassy in Armenia to pay attention to what is happening, thus trying to protect themselves from possible reprisals.
The Union of Journalists of Armenia strongly condemns all attempts to persecute Tatul Hakobyan on the basis of his professional activities, and, moreover, criminal intentions that can threaten his life.
What happened is an example of a vicious atmosphere of evil and hatred rooted in Armenia and Armenian reality in general, which requires an adequate and strict legal and political assessment.
At the same time, what is happening to Tatul Hakobyan, unfortunately, is not an exception, but rather a rule, another manifestation of a pattern that has already become widespread. In particular, over the past 3.5 years in Armenia, numerous editors, journalists, experts, public and political figures have been working in such a dangerous, threatening atmosphere, but all our statements about this remain unanswered.
Taking into account these unfortunate incidents, the Union of Journalists of Armenia appeals to all competent authorities with an appeal to ensure the safety of Tatul Hakobyan upon his return to Armenia, at the same time to show consistency in identifying and prosecuting the authors of threats and organizers.
As for the thoughts, views, ideas of Tatul Hakobyan, or any other public person, you can disagree with them, object, debate, but only in public, political, political, and professional formats.
The Union of Journalists of Armenia expresses its support for Tatul Hakobyan and declares its intention to keep in the center of its attention the issue of investigating the above-mentioned illegal actions and bringing to justice all those responsible.
